De Boer: Al-Duhail good move for Tottenham defender Alderweireld

Former Ajax star Ronald de Boer believes a move to Al Duhail is a good decision for Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgium defender is leaving Tottenham for the Qataris after an offer of €13m was accepted yesterday morning.

Alderweireld’s contract ran to 2023, but management were happy to sell. Tottenham’s new technical director Fabio Paratici, together with manager Nuno Espirito Santo, is in the process of reshaping the squad. Alderweireld made 236 appearances for Spurs.

The centre-back, who has won 113 caps for his country, formed a strong defensive partnership with compatriot Jan Vertonghen – now at Benfica – to help Spurs reach the Champions League final in 2019.

“I played football there with my brother and other top players like Pep Guardiola, Gabriel Batistuta, Marcel Desailly and Sonny Anderson,” says De Boer to Het Nieuwsblad via Voetbalzone.

“In those years there was no question of any of us being able to stay as internationals for his country.

“We were all 34-35 years old. But Toby is 32.”

Indeed, De Boer is confident the move won’t hurt Alderweired nor Belgium’s World Cup chances.

De Boer continued: “Of course the level is lower, but I don’t see why he can’t keep his level if he takes good care of himself and is spared from injuries. The World Cup in Qatar is already there next year. I don’t think this season will make a big difference.”

Al-Duhail’s current head coach is Sabri Lamouchi, the former Nottingham Forest manager.
