Bundesliga: Schalke 04 sack head coach Dimitrios Grammozis

Schalke have parted ways with head coach Dimitrios Grammozis following their 4-3 Bundesliga 2 home defeat to Hansa Rostock on Matchday 25.

A statement from the club read:

We have come to a point in the season where big decisions need to be made. We no longer believed that we would have a high chance of achieving our goal of returning to the Bundesliga with the current setup. We, therefore, decided that the team needed a fresh impulse for the end of the season.

The team have lacked the required consistency, the results, and especially the performances since the start of the year. Teams that want to go up need this consistency. We still believe in the quality the squad has. However, in order to be successful in a promotion race, we need to continuously see development, which hasn’t been the case.

Dimitrios Grammozis took charge of FC Schalke 04 during a very challenging time, and was able to stabilize the team after relegation and the subsequent rebuild in 2. Bundesliga. We wish him all the best for the future.

Schalke dropped to sixth position in the table, six points behind St. Pauli and Darmstadt, the top two automatic promotion spots. They might be seven points behind leaders Werder Bremen, depending on the outcome of Werder Bremen’s match against Dynamo Dresden on Sunday.

The widening chasm has compelled the club to act.
