Brentford goalscorer Toney: I wasn’t trying to wind-up Mitrovic

Brentford striker Ivan Toney insists he wasn’t seeking to wind-up Aleksandar Mitrovic with his goal celebration in victory over Fulham.

Toney struck from the spot in Monday’s 3-2 victory.

He said, “This place is always rocking whether it is a derby or not, the fans were behind for us that win and it was for them.

“We could have been ahead by two or three maybe but fair play to them, they stuck in and held out. It was a bit unfortunate we hit the post twice and then they got a free-kick that hit the post and then they stick it in.

“I think the games go like that, you can have spells for 10 minutes and then they have a spell. That is how the game is but whether you concede or score you have to keep going.

“We started the second half the same way we started the first half. Try to get on top of them and press them high and it worked.

“We are going to take it game by game and hopefully if a few teams slip up we can win the league.”

On taking penalties, he added: “The wait doesn’t matter, the longer the better really because I can get away and think of other things like being away on holiday and chilling. The goalkeeper didn’t move but I have always got a spot where I put the ball.

“I only changed the way I take penalties after I missed one.”

And on his celebration, Toney insisted: “I am a fan of [Aleksandr] Mitrovic so I have to do his celebration and it was also for my son.”
