Bayern Munich’s Julian Nagelsmann after eliminating PSG: “We were largely on top”

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann was, more than anything, relieved after his side qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League over PSG. The Bavarians won 3-0 on aggregate and dominated proceedings in the second leg with Eric Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry scoring in their 2-0 second leg win at the Allianz Arena. “In the end, in both games, we were largely on top”, said Nagelsmann in his post-game press conference that L’Équipe attended.

It was not smooth sailing throughout for Bayern though, with PSG coming close to go levelling in the tie in the first half. Nagelsmann assessed that his players did not follow his instructions to the letter and left too many spaces for Les Parisiens to run into. “In the dressing room at half-time, we drew the necessary conclusions in order to return with better organisation and more discipline.

Nagelsmann rubbed salt on PSG’s wounds by saying he expected Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé to be more dangerous that they turned out to be, with both star players expertly handled by Bayern’s centre-backs. “We were able to control PSG with our game plan, which did not allow them to develop their opportunities. The fact Mbappé found it this hard to stand out is proof we were up to the task.” Nagelsmann also heaped praises on French international defender Dayot Upamecano for his remarkable display on Wednesday night. “He was impressive, although it’s been a while since I was surprised by him. Tonight, he switched Mbappé off. Right now, he’s at the top of his game.”
