Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano after eliminating PSG from the Champions League: “We showed we were a team.”

Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano produced a masterclass in defending as his side defeated PSG 2-0 in their Champions League last 16 second leg. Bayern will accompany Benfica, Chelsea and AC Milan in the quarter-finals. Goals from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry further strengthened the Bavarians’ lead following their first leg 1-0 win at Parc des Princes three weeks ago.

Speaking to broadcasters Canal+, the French international has lauded Bayern Munich’s teamwork and Julian Nagelsmann’s tactical instructions in snuffing out the threat posed by Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi. “We knew we had to close down spaces, me and Matthijs [De Ligt], and slide back. We had good communication as well, between me, Matthijs and Stanisic. We dit it well.”

Asked about Bayern’s superiority over PSG, Upamecano stated he knew the small details would swing the tie in either team’s favour, and that proved right with Choupo-Moting scoring the opener following a error from Marco Verratti. “We took good advantage of it. Today, we showed we were a team above all.” Upamecano also spoke on his performance levels, that reached new heights following an impressive World Cup with France. “Thank God, I’m in form. I’m still a young player. I pay attention and I play with great players that give me a lot of advice, and I take them.”
