Barcelona plotting a number of “levers” to put in a contract offer to Lionel Messi

LaLiga leaders FC Barcelona are currently strategising to make as appealing a contract proposal to 35-year-old Argentinian international and World Cup winner Lionel Messi, whose current deal with Ligue 1 title-chasers PSG is expiring in June, according to Le Parisien.

The Catalan giants had to pull a number of financial levers last summer in order to comply with the LaLiga salary cap regulations. The French outlet estimates that Barcelona are around €200m in the red heading into this summer in order to comply with the same rules for next season, a consequence of which being that they are currently unable to register the new contract of midfielder Gavi.

Despite a number of financial sacrifices made by Barcelona, including the sales of players, contract terminations and players accepting wage reductions, LaLiga consider that the Catalan club’s management of finances remains poor and unacceptable.

Joan Laporta and his management team must therefore continue to save money before considering the Messi opportunity. They will undoubtedly go through a layoff plan for many non-sporting employees, further attempts to reduce the sporting wage bill, and the sale of players like Ansu Fati, Clément Lenglet, Ferran Torres and Éric Garcia. In the event of appealing offers, players with a high salary will not be retained.

The Catalan club will also attempt to get creative with the proposal that they make Messi. Although they are expected to include a guaranteed minimum salary in an initial 2-year contract offer with the option for a 3rd year, Barcelona will look to add a number of additional incentives: providing Messi with a percentage of revenues from new sponsors which the club believes will be attracted by Messi’s return (i); a percentage of Camp Nou ticket sales (ii); a percentage of monies received from the sale of Lionel Messi merchandise (iii).
