Atletico Madrid’s season went from bad to worse as they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Real Sociedad on Wednesday night.
Diego Simeone’s side were looking to salvage a poor season by advancing to the next round of the Copa del Rey but were convincingly beaten 2-0.
Goals from Adnan Januzaj (33rd) and Alexander Sorloth (47th) were enough to put the Basque side through to the quarters in a match they controlled for long periods.
Both Januzaj and Yannick Carasso came close to opening the scores but their efforts hit the post before the hosts eventually took a deserved lead.

With their LaLiga title defense effectively over – they are 16 points behind leaders Real Madrid – Atleti’s only chance of silverware remains the Champions League, even though that remains far-fetched considering their form.
They will take on Ralf Rangnick’s unpredictable Manchester United in the Round of 16.
Real Sociedad join Mallorca, Rayo Vallecano, Cadiz, Valencia, and Real Betis in the quarter-finals, with the full lineup expected to be completed on Thursday night when Real Madrid face Elche and Barcelona play Athletic Bilbao.
Up next though for Diego Simeone’s side is a home LaLiga clash against Valencia.
