Atletico Madrid defender Gimenez apologises to fans after angry reaction to whistles

Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez has apologised to fans after his reaction to home stadium whistles during defeat to Levante.

Levante won 1-0 last night, with Gimenez clashing with Atleti fans late in the game.

After being whistled for making a square pass, loud whistles rang out from the stands which resulted in Gimenez demanding fans stop.

The defender’s reaction only produced louder whistles in response.

Afterwards, Gimenez said: “They are moments with so much nervousness, desire to win and things don’t happen and that sector of the stands recriminates me, it hurt me a lot. But this is a family and in families there are fights.

“Apologise to the people in the sector who whistled at me, not to take it as something to get angry about.

“I am not that type of person to recriminate something, but in moments of tension and nervousness we are tense and angry and they make us commit acts that we regret or that we did not want to do. I apologise wholeheartedly to people who have taken it badly, I apologise wholeheartedly, I have no problem asking them one by one, that’s not where the anger is.”
