Atletico Madrid has announced the extent of Antoine Griezmann’s injury.
Griezmann came off injured in the second half of their Copa del Rey win at Rayo Majadahonda.
The Frenchman was making his return from an injury suffered in December’s derby against Real Madrid, as he came on at half time to score Los Rojiblancos’ fourth goal.
Shortly after that, Griezmann felt discomfort in the same muscle which had kept him sidelined for almost a month.
It’s unusual for the forward, who had only missed four games in the 10 years of his career, but he now faces another spell in the stands.
Griezmann underwent tests on Friday which confirmed that he has suffered a relapse of his right thigh injury.
“Antoine Griezmann has suffered a relapse in the muscle injury he sustained in his right thigh,” read Los Colchoneros’ statement.
While Atletico have not stated how long the 30-year-old will be out for, he will miss the club’s LaLiga Santander match away at Villarreal on Sunday and most likely the Supercopa de Espana, too.
