The win, together with Villarreal’s defeat against Real Sociedad, means the Lions will remain in the hunt for Europe until the last fixture.
Thanks to goals from Alex Berenguer and Asier Villalibre, Marcelino’s side are now just one point behind Villarreal and can go above the Yellow if they end the season level on points thanks to better results in the matches between both sides.
Los Rojiblancos will take on Sevilla next week, with Andalusians now guaranteed Champions League qualification.
Meanwhile, Emery’s team visit the Camp Nou and must match or better Athletic’s result at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. If Villarreal lose in Barcelona, one point will see Los Leones return to Europe.
Although still dependent on other results going their way, today’s performance means Athletic now go to Seville with their European hopes very much alive.
