🇪🇸 Spain vs Ivory Coast 🇨🇮

Spain won Group C, but not easily, having only claimed five points from three games (W1 D2). For all of the talent in their squad, they have not found goals easy to come by, finding the net only twice so far at the Olympics. Ivory Coast’s Kouassi served his one-match suspension during the final group game against Germany, and he is in contention to return to the starting 11 against Spain alongside star man Franck Kessié. This should be a fiercely contested midfield battle.

🇯🇵 Japan vs New Zealand 🇳🇿

Host nation Japan comes up against a New Zealand side who just edged out Romania on goal difference to finish second in Group B and are perhaps fortunate to be here. Japan was highly impressive in Group A, against heavyweight nations with greater reputations. They started in a workmanlike fashion with a 1-0 win over South Africa but then beat Mexico 2-1, and thrashed France 4-0.

🇧🇷 Brazil vs Egypt 🇪🇬

Brazil is the overwhelming favourite to advance here. The Canarinhas drew 0-0 against Ivory Coast – in which Douglas Luiz was sent off in only the 11th minute – a result which was sandwiched by 4-2 and 3-1 wins over Germany and Saudi Arabia respectively, with Everton forward Richarlison bagging five goals across the two wins. Egypt will defend resolutely with their 352 system but Brazil’s extra class should shine through.

🇰🇷 South Korea vs Mexico 🇲🇽

This is the most evenly priced match in the quarterfinals. South Korea lost their first game 1-0 to New Zealand, but performed well in their next two, beating Romania 4-0 and then Honduras 6-0. Mexico beat France and South Africa by large margins but lost 2-1 to Japan. With the Mexican side scoring in every game and South Korea racking up a total of ten goals in their last two outings, a high-scoring affair is on the cards.
