The Premier League 2021/22 season is coming to a close on Sunday 22 May 2022 with a lot of things still left to fight for.
While Manchester City and Liverpool have been a class above the rest, there are still things to settle on the final day and we take a look at what’s in store on the day?
Salah is again in contention for the award as he is leading the assist charts with 13. His main competition will come from Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who sits on 12 with the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Mason Mount, and Andy Robertson (all 10) perhaps too far back to challenge for the accolade.
Man City’s Ederson and Liverpool’s Alisson are level on 20 clean sheets in the race for the Golden Glove, with the former looking to win the accolade for a third consecutive campaign.
Alisson won the award in 2018/19 and will hope to move level with Ederson on two career prizes, where he would join his compatriot, Petr Cech, Joe Hart, and Pepe Reina as multiple winners of the league’s Golden Glove.
While City still has the advantage of winning this season’s title, nothing is confirmed yet. The Pep Guardiola side will be up against Aston Villa at the same time second-placed Liverpool will be taking on Wolves.
It will be the fourth time City has gone into a final day needing to win to secure the title and on each previous occasion, the club has ended the season as champions.
City will be Champions with a win, while their superior goal difference (+72 compared to +66) means that if they drop points, Liverpool would still need to win their game against Wolves if they are to claim the title.
The next contest will be in the Champions League where North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal will be hoping for fortunes. Spurs are in a strong position, and their strong goal difference means even a draw at relegated Norwich should be enough to secure their place in the Champions League next season.
- Europa League and Conference League
Manchester United and West Ham are competing for a place in the top six, one which will secure a place in the Europa League for next season.
David Moyes’ team will finish in the top six if they win at Brighton and United fail to beat Crystal Palace, with the Red Devils needing to win to be sure of their place in the top six due to their inferior goal difference. Whichever team finishes seventh will enter the Europa Conference League next season.
Everton confirmed their place in the English top-flight on Thursday with a win over Crystal Palace and will enter the final day with some breathing space.
The fight to avoid the drop will now be between Burnley and Leeds with one joining Watford and Norwich in the Championship next season. Both teams are level on 35 points ahead of the final fixtures but Burnley has a far superior goal difference. They will however be taking a rejuvenated Newcastle United on a day that Leeds will be up against Brentford.
Mohamed Salah leads the charts but is just one ahead of Spurs’ Son Heung-Min. The South Korean has scored 10 goals in his last nine appearances for Spurs, moving to 21 league goals.
The Egyptian missed Liverpool’s win at Southampton in midweek and could miss out against Wolves. Should he win the accolade, Son could become the first Asian player to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot, whilst he would also join an exclusive list of players to have done so without scoring a single penalty.
