Wolves’ European dreams took a further dent as they went down 1-0 away at West Ham on Sunday afternoon.
Bruno Lage’s side had in recent weeks built momentum with impressive wins to keep their dreams alive, but two losses in a space of four days has hugely dented their hopes.
The Hammers, just like Wolves, are chasing a European spot, and their hopes got a major lift thanks to Tomas Soucek’s goal on the hour mark.
In a cagey affair in London, it was the hosts who came closest to opening the scores in the 23rd minute when Aaron Cresswell took a free kick from a promising distance, but he sent it narrowly wide of the right post.
Just before the half-hour mark, Michail Antonio forced a good save out of Jose Sa, after he was left unmarked in the box and given time to unleash a shot from inside the box.
Five minutes from the half-time whistle, Declan Rice got a chance and tried his luck from the edge of the box with a measured shot, but it hit the right post and was cleared to safety.
After numerous attempts, West Ham took the lead just before the hour mark when Antonio played in Soucek, who showed great determination to get to the ball before a couple of defenders and from inside the box slotted it into the bottom right corner.
Wolves carved out a few chances of their own as they sought a way back into the match, but the Hammers held on for the win.
The three points took West Ham to fifth on the standings, level on points with Manchester United.
Wolves, on the other hand, remain eighth on 40 points.
