๐ŸŒฑ Chelsea Academy Player of the Year: Where are the past six winners?

Following an impressive season, Tino Livramento was named Chelsea Academy Player of the Year for the 2020//21 season.ย

The defender, who joined the club’s youth ranks as an Under-9, had an impressive campaign, with his eye-catching displays seeing him train with the senior team towards the end of the season.ย

Starting 26 of 30 eligible games, the youngster was the top appearance-maker across all Academy competitions last term, amassing an impressive 2,261 minutes of football.ย

He is the latest academy star to win the accolade, but who are the others on that list?

2015 – Dominic Solanke

Solanke was destined for greatness but never came close to reaching the expected heights. He won a number of trophies and persona awards, including the Uefa Youth League, U-21 Premier League title, and FA Youth Cup (twice).ย

After his contract ran out at the west London club, he moved to Liverpool but his fortunes went south, and eventually ended at AFC Bournemouth, where he has similarly struggled.ย

2016 – Fikayo Tomori

One of the recent success stories from the Chelsea academy. Just like many other academy youngsters, Tomori’s star shone from early days.

With Chelsea eager to see him develop further, he was sent out on loan and returned to the club in Frank Lampard’s first season in charge.

He was impressive in the early days but fizzled out and eventually lost his place in the team. He was loaned out to AC Milan early this year, and after forming a formidable partnership with Simon Kjaer, the Italian giants made the loan deal permanent last month.ย

2017 – Mason Mount

He needs no introduction. Mount’s growth has been steady, from the season he played at Vitesse to the Championship at Derby under Frank Lampard.

He then took the Premier League by storm and was arguably Chelsea’s best player last season as they won the Champions League.ย

2018 – Reece James

Just like Mount, Reece James has been a big success story. He also played in the Championship before Lampard gave him a chance in his first season.ย

He has since become a regular starter and even broken into the England national team set-up.

He played a key role as the Blues won the Champions League and finished fourth in the Premier League last season.ย

2019 – Conor Gallagher

Gallagher is regarded one of the best young midfielders in the Premier League. Crystal Palace have won the race to sign him on loan for the upcoming season, and it will be interesting to see how he develops.ย

2020 – Billy Gilmour

The young Gilmour is fearless. He has since become a regular with the Scotland senior team and showed his class at the EURO 2020 during a game against England where he won man-of-the-match.ย

Chelsea are desperate to give him regular time, and that saw him move to Norwich on a season-long loan.
