A French senator has blasted minister of the interior Gérald Darmanin’s version of events regarding the Champions League final.
There was significant controversy during the game between Real Madrid and Liverpool, when many Liverpool fans were unable to safely enter the stadium pre-match in a timely manner.
Fans were tear-gassed, hit with riot shields by police and robbed by armed gangs before and after the game.
Darmanin had sought to blame Reds supporters for the problems, a version of events French inquiry senator François-Noël Buffet called into question.
“The major problem comes from the minister of the interior, who lied,” Buffet told Le Progres.
“Following the events, he told us bulls***. That is what sparked the fire. If he had admitted to mistakes and apologised, there would have been no huge controversy.”
“Initially, the [Darmanin] told us there were 30,000 fake tickets,’ Buffet added.
“In the end, only 2,800 fake tickets were counted [by UEFA]. He had also said that it was the fault of the English, who had caused all the carnage.
“This is not true in reality. The English were not responsible. They have nothing to do with it. It was the poor organisation [of the match] that caused all the difficulties that were encountered, in particular the [security] controls at the stadium.”
